First Energy awards Partners in Education a grant for College and Career Readiness in the field of Electricity
TOLEDO, OH—First Energy Corp. awarded the Success Mentors program at Partners in Education an $800 grant to teach middle school students at Toledo Public Schools’ Pickett Academy a special unit on electricity. The unit called Wiring a House is from the Explore It Series from Kelvin Educational. The Success Mentors program staff along with electricians from IBEW Local #8 will help students discover the principles of practical wiring and electrical circuitry by installing lights and switches in the rooms of a cardboard house. Success Mentors is a Community Connectors grant from Ohio Department of Education that helps prepare middle school students to be high school ready, college ready and career ready. Area business persons provide mentoring to the students bringing career advice and helping them stay focused on their futures. In the program, students… learn to set goals and monitor their own progress on career pathways develop positive character traits needed for success in education and employment. learn to problem solve via hands-on, inquiry-based lessons that help prepare them for post-secondary education and employment. Success Mentors takes place afterschool Monday through Thursday at Pickett Academy in Toledo. Pickett Academy is one of Toledo Public Schools Community Hub schools. Success Mentors partners there with other nonprofits such as Connecting Kids to Meals and Ohio State University Extension Office to broaden opportunities for students.
