Toledo has its first Spanish-language FM radio station
Nuestra Gente Community Projects, Inc., is pleased to have launched the city's first fully Spanish-language FM radio station, WVZC-LP 96.5 FM. The station officially went on the air Dec. 30 and has been broadcasting a steady lineup of Latin favorites and hits, reaching
the Spanish-speaking community in most of Toledo, Rossford, and Oregon.
"The Latin population in Toledo is growing, and we deserve to have media in our own language," said Linda Parra, WVZC founder, and president.
Parra, a native of Venezuela who moved to Toledo in 2000, has been working in media since she was 18. After moving to the United States, in 2005 she started a Spanish-language radio program, "Nuestra Gente Radio Show." She said listeners would often ask her why Spanish-language programming was only limited to a few hours a week. That led to the dream of launching a fully Spanish-language station, a dream that has now been realized after years of diligent
effort.
In 2008 she founded a nonprofit organization, Nuestra Gente Community Projects, to serve Lucas County's Hispanic population.
Parra said the station's long-term goal is to expand its programming beyond music to news, weather, and other vital community information.
"The whole community has been asking to hear something in their own language," Parra said. "There were Spanish stations in other communities, but not in Toledo where the population is growing."
