The Franciscan Center of Lourdes University is pleased to announce the March slate of events. Saturday, March 3 The Toledo Symphony’s Welltower Mozart & More series presents Concerto Nos. 5 & 20 at 2:30 p.m. featuring William Eddins, conductor and pianist. For more information, visit Individuals can also call 419-517-0118 or email Tuesday, March 13 Science Alliance for Valuing the Environment (SAVE) presents “The Third Battle for a Clean Lake Erie” at 7:30 p.m. Lake Erie is a large freshwater lake that is very important to us in the Western Lake Erie Basin and beyond. During the presentation, Advocates for a Clean Lake Erie will work as if the water emergency of August 2014 is ongoing, focusing on how we can vigorously safeguard our lake’s health. Each May, birders from around the world flock to northwest Ohio for Black Swamp Bird Observatory’s “Biggest Week in American Birding.” Timed to coincide with the peak of songbird migration through the area, the Biggest Week connects birders with one of the greatest concentrations of migratory birds in the western hemisphere. In her presentation, Kimberly Kaufman explains why the birds are here and how much the visiting birders mean for our local economy. Ms. Kaufman is the Executive Director of Black Swamp Bird Observatory. Refreshments are offered at 9:15 a.m. and the presentation begins at 10 a.m. The lecture is free to first-time visitors and Lifelong Learning members. The March Lifelong Learning Hot Topic – From Apathetic to Advocate - begins at 11:15 a.m. We may know that disadvantaged people in our area have problems, but often we do not take action. Susan Sneider shares her personal story about her journey of self-discovery, from a suburban grandmother with blinders to an advocate for the homeless. Hear how working with Toledo’s homeless population has changed Susan’s life and outlook. The lunch and learn event is $10 for Lifelong Learning members and $15 for non-members. Their visit includes time spent at Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University and The University of Toledo. The 14-member dance and music troupe has designed a special performance for the Greater Toledo area. Yanshan University traces its history back to the Harbin Institute of Technology founded in 1920. In 1978, it was accredited as one of 88 national key institutions of higher learning in China. The University enrolls 39,000 students and confers undergraduate and graduate degrees. When he saw a man on the street corner holding a cardboard sign that read “Want a job,” he decided to take him and others in his situation up on it. Mr. Berry and his staff started a citywide initiative to help the homeless by giving them day jobs and a place to sleep – and the results were incredible. Find out how your city can replicate Albuquerque’s model with this frank and optimistic talk. The event is free and open to the public. Individuals are invited to bring their own lunch.
