U of M, Jim Harbaugh to Speak in Toledo
Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and The Toledo Bar Association will welcome Toledo-born and legal assistance advocate, University of Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh to serve as the 2018 Access to Justice Awards Dinner keynote speaker. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 10, 2018, at SeaGate Convention Centre with a sponsor reception and awards dinner kicking off at 7:00 p.m.
Coach Harbaugh serves on the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) Leaders Council, the single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans in the nation. Harbaugh took his commitment to legal access to Capitol Hill in June testifying in front of a congressional hearing regarding the justice gap and the legal needs of low-income Americans. “I may be a football coach, but I am an American first and foremost -- and all Americans should care about equal access to justice … The issue is about fairness, fundamental fairness. As I see it, if you have money, you have access to justice. If you don't have money, you have less access to justice. That's not the way it should work." Harbaugh said.
Closer to home, Harbaugh hosted the Legal Services Corporation Access to Justice Forum on The University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor in November; attendees included public interest law practitioners, advocates, and members of state and federal judiciaries.
The 18th Annual Access to Justice Awards Dinner is an event led by the northwest Ohio legal community with proceeds to support legal services in our community. The event also recognizes and celebrates individuals and organizations from the community for their contributions to promoting and providing access to justice for the underprivileged and underserved. Patricia Wise, the president of ABLE’s and Legal Aid’s boards of trustees, “Coach Harbaugh is a champion for justice and legal access; we are fortunate to have the opportunity to bring him to Toledo to continue the conversation locally.”
