Maumee River Water Trail Dedication Wednesday
The Maumee River, from the Indiana border to Maumee Bay, is Ohio’s newest designated Water Trail, and the first in northwest Ohio. A dedication ceremony and announcement is planned for: Wednesday, May 16 at 11 a.m. Farnsworth Metropark - Boat Launch entrance 8801 S. River Road, Waterville This event for invited guests will begin with speakers and conclude around noon with a “ribbon cutting.” Speakers: • Dave Zenk, Metroparks Toledo executive director • Scott Sharpe, ODNR, Parks, and Watercraft Northwest District Manager • Bill Burkett, Director, Department of Economic and Business Development, City of Toledo • Ryan Mack, Defiance County Commissioner • Lera Doneghy, Metroparks Toledo Board Vice-president Background The 107 miles of the Maumee River in Ohio has been designated as the 11th Ohio Water Trail by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Water Trails provide uniform signage, mile markers, maps and other printed and online resources to help canoe and kayak paddlers chart their trips. The trail designation will help make the river a destination for water recreation, and increase tourism to the region. The designation was the result of an application process that involved a series of public meetings held last fall. Counties, cities, villages, and townships along the river adopted resolutions in support of the designation. The effort was a project of Metroparks Toledo and the Defiance Soil and Water Conservation District. At the event, Metroparks will give an update on campsites being developed on Granger Island in Waterville, which will open this summer to provide overnight accommodations to paddlers using the river.
