Equality Toledo to Open New Food Pantry

[TOLEDO, OH] - Equality Toledo (ET) plans to host an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, unveiling the organization’s new food pantry, located at Collingwood Presbyterian Church (2108 Collingwood Blvd.) on Thursday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m. “Our purpose in opening this pantry is to offer an inclusive space for community members, especially LGBTQ+ folks, struggling with food insecurity in our city,” said Analese Alvarez, executive director of ET. “The needs of the LGBTQ+ community are very unique. It’s important that we provide all people in need — especially queer Toledoans — with an accessible place they can receive food assistance. We also want visitors to get connected to LGBTQ+ resources that Equality Toledo has close ties with, or a close working relationship with,” she said. The pantry will be open on Tuesdays from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 1:00-4:00 p.m. “After conversing with the community, prior to the pantry coming to fruition, we knew that having open hours in the evening and on the weekends was very important,” said Nick Komives, Toledo city council member and former executive director of ET. “These are folks who are working a nine to five, and yet are still unable to afford nutritious food. If our space was only available in the morning, afternoon, or closed on the weekend, we wouldn’t be properly serving those who are in real need,” stated Komives. In addition to food, the pantry will also provide hygiene kits. In the future, ET volunteers hope to offer specific items to trans individuals, such as chest binders. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, Council Member Komives, ET Executive Director Alvarez, ET board members, ET volunteers and various local constituents will be in attendance at the ceremony this Thursday. “I would like to also thank SeaGate Food Bank for helping us through the paperwork and officially approving our new, wonderful space. We are very excited to get this idea off the ground and begin helping those who need it most,” concluded Alvarez.
