NEW MIKVAH TO OPEN, MARKING COMEBACK OF JEWISH RITUAL BATH
Grand Opening of Chabad’s Beautiful Mikvah
TOLEDO, OHIO —Chabad of Toledo, under the leadership of Chabad Rabbi and Rebbetzin Yossi and Raizel Shemtov, has just completed the building of a state-of-the-art beautiful new mikvah (literally: a collection of water) in Toledo.
Once considered an outdated ritual, the mikvah, otherwise known as the Jewish purification bath, has made a comeback with Jews of all affiliations, and even the unaffiliated, who are attracted to the spiritually uplifting experience. Some dub the mikvah as a spa for the mind and soul, as the multi-faceted ritual, pampers all aspects of the body.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, considered the mikvah one of the basic pillars of Judaism. Placing great emphasis on mikvah observance and in order to make the experience more inviting, the Rebbe sent Chabad emissaries to build beautiful mikvahs throughout the world in locales as remote as Kinshasa in the Congo; Riga, Latvia; and Lima, Peru.
The existing Mikvah in Toledo was built almost 50 years ago, and after many years of faithful service to our community has been in serious decay for a number of years. Jewish women will now enjoy the use of a modern facility and will be able to fulfill the biblical tradition in preparation of their wedding or on a monthly basis. We are grateful to MIKVAH USA, a wonderful organization who helps bring new Mikvahs to small Jewish communities, and who has gifted Chabad House of Toledo a grant to cover 50% of the cost of constructing the new Community Mikvah.
The new Mikvah at Chabad House will have a special dedication at the grand opening of the new Chabad House and Friendship Circle on August 23rd, with prominent community members and local dignitaries in attendance.
