Equality Toledo Seeks Applicants for 2018 James Wozniak Memorial Scholarship
Each year, Equality Toledo (ET) extends an invitation to Northwest Ohio’s LGBTQ+ academics to apply for a special $500 memorial scholarship, made possible by the James Wozniak endowment fund. “Being able to support students is such an important piece of who we are at Equality Toledo,” said Analese Alvarez, executive director of ET. “The generous spirit of a former donor allows us to present a monetary award to outstanding local students. The applicant can either be a member of the LGBTQ community, a child of LGBTQ parents or a straight-ally who has displayed exemplary work in helping uplift the LGBTQ community,” she said. To apply, students must be at least 17 years old and currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a postsecondary institution or vocational school. Applicants must also be receiving their education in Northwest Ohio or be a current / permanent resident of Northwest Ohio. “LGBTQ youth face such great hardships,” Alvarez continued, “because they are more likely to be homeless, they are more likely to face financial hardship and they are more likely to earn less than their straight-counterparts. If there is anything we can do to make their journey to academic or career success a little less stressful, we are happy to have a small way to help them continue their education so they can live a better, more financially stable life,” she concluded. Past scholarship winners have expressed the following traits and qualities: leadership, community service, community involvement and financial need. Current applicants are encouraged to share their extracurricular activity experience, employment experience, personal hardships and involvement in the LGBTQ+ community. For all official scholarship details and requirements, applicants are encouraged to apply online through the special link at the top of Equality Toledo’s webapge (www.equalitytoledo.org) or email the organization at email@example.com to learn more about this exceptional opportunity. The deadline to apply is October 15, 2018.
