Football Star Returns to Toledo for Packo's Bun Signing

Pro football veteran Brent Williams will be taking a hand-off from Tony Packo’s® to sign one of their iconic celebrity hot dog buns. The event marks one of the first times the former defensive end has visited the Glass City in the many years since he graduated from the University of Toledo.

Williams will sign the bun at 11:30am on Friday, October 5th at Packo’s at the Park, 7 South Superior in downtown Toledo. The public and press are welcome to join the crowd to cheer him on to a touchdown for this auspicious occasion. In turn, he promises to raise his voice in support of his alma mater when it takes on the Bowling Green Falcons on October 6th in the Glass Bowl.

A native of Flint, Michigan, Williams attended the University of Toledo where he began his football career, then answered the National Football League call from the New England Patriots in 1986 to join the team. For the next eleven years, he distinguished himself on the field with the Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks, and the New York Jets. He retired from professional sports in 1996.

Williams’ reunion with the Glass City comes as part of his participation in Promedica’s Night of Champions for Kids, a charity event on Thursday, October 4th which supports the advance of children-based programs in our community such as the Ebeid Neighborhood Promise and the First Tee campaign. The organization describes the fundraiser as featuring “professional athletes and other champions including famed UT Rocket alumni Bruce Gradkowski and Chuck Ealey.” Furthermore, “the evening will include fine cuisine, cocktails and a special silent auction of autographed sports memorabilia.”

Tony Packo’s opened in 1932 and currently operates five locations in the Greater Toledo area, the newest in Sylvania on Alexis Road. Actor Burt Reynolds was the first celebrity to sign a bun for the restaurant in 1972. Packo’s currently displays more than a thousand autographed buns throughout all its stores.
