Ohio Secular Celebrant Bill Supporter Visits Toledo Nov 10th

Monette Richards, the president of the Center for Inquiry (CFI) NE Ohio chapter, will speak at the November 10th General Meeting of the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie (SHoWLE). Her talk is titled "So you've voted, now what?" will be an interactive talk on how to introduce yourself to your elected officials and make sure they know what you want after an election.

Her talk will be in the Fellowship Hall of the First Unitarian Church of Toledo 3205 Glendale Ave in Toledo at 1 PM.

One of the issues that CFI NE Ohio has been working on for several years is getting a secular celebrant law passed. The current bill introduced in this session of the legislature is Senate Bill 52.

Senate Bill 52 would reword the current law governing marriage officiants to allow anyone, regardless of religious affiliation, to register with the Secretary of State and receive the authorization to solemnize marriages. If the bill becomes law, secular humanists, atheists, and other nonreligious Ohioans will no longer have to settle for marriage by government employee, or compromise their principles by paying for some quasi-religious mail-order certification. Instead, they will be able to celebrate this deeply meaningful milestone event in a way that embraces their nontheistic worldview.

CFI has been successful in lawsuits to allow secular celebrants in Illinois and Indiana. They currently have a lawsuit pending in Michigan. CFI would prefer a state change the law rather than having to file a lawsuit but it is ready to do so in Ohio at some point in the near future.

Since 2013 Richards has organized and hosted a secular lobby day, The Secular Summit, at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.

That event, usually held in January or February, has secular citizens of Ohio getting updates on issues and bills of interest to secular voters. Then those who attend the lobby day visit their elected representatives and senators to discuss those issues.

Richards has also been active with women's issues in the nonreligious community and is on the board of Secular Woman. That group "envisions a future in which women without supernatural beliefs have the opportunities and resources they need to participate openly and confidently as respected voices of leadership in the secular community and every aspect of society."

The mission of the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie is to provide a supportive local community for humanists and other nontheists, while promoting an ethical, reasonable, and secular approach to life through education, community service, outreach, activism, and social events.

SHoWLE meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month and all general meetings are free and open to the public. The website is humanistswle.org
