K-12 teachers will receive 10 continuing education contact hours for participation TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will host a continuing education conference for teachers Friday, June 14. Drawn to Learn: Visual Strategies for Student Success is a unique-one day conference for K-12 teachers, offering tools and strategies for incorporating visuals into the classroom. Opening the conference will be Wendi Pillars, a University of Toledo graduate and author of Visual Notetaking for Educators. The conference will also feature a keynote from Scott McCloud, American cartoonist and comic theorist, who will demonstrate why every visual choice we make matters in today’s fast-moving cascade of images and ideas. In addition, there will be a variety of workshops meeting Ohio Learning Standards, ranging from reading currency to classroom filmmaking on a budget. “As part of the Museum’s ongoing visual literacy effort with teachers, we have learned that incorporating visuals in the classroom is a great way to improve student outcomes,” explained Kate Blake, TMA’s assistant director of education. “For this conference, we have partnered with a team of dynamic speakers to showcase how teachers can use drawing, filmmaking, and other visual tools in their classrooms to improve reading, writing and more.” Partnering with TMA to host the conference is the University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum and the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West. Conference registration includes access to all sessions, certificate offering 10 contact hours and lunch. Registration is $100 and a limited number of scholarships are available.
