Toledo Museum of Art awarded grant from Toledo Community Foundation to expand Teen Leaders program
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Toledo Community Foundation to expand TMA’s Teen Leaders program to open applications to youth from schools across Toledo. “The Teen Leaders (previously Teen Apprentice) program provides opportunities to experiment, gain real-world experiences, and truly engage out of school,” said Maria Iafelice, TMA’s youth and family programs manager. “We are grateful to the Toledo Community Foundation for the opportunity to expand and empower more teens to increase their skills in the arts while also building key transferable skills that positively impact their development.” The Teen Apprentice program, which was recently recognized by the Ohio Museum Association as the best education and outreach program for museums of similar size, was established in 2015 to increase youth attendance at the Museum and provide real-world experiences, in partnership with the Toledo School for the Arts. Teen Leaders will attend bi-weekly sessions at TMA after school to plan quarterly, large-scale teen activities at the Museum, and work with visiting artists quarterly to complete projects, Iafelice said. “We are focusing on this age group because it is during these pivotal years that it is imperative for teens to experience diversity, acceptance, self-determination, and adaptability to explore their talents,” she said.
