"Intense Adornment: The Jewelry of Sue Szabo" Artist Demonstration
20 North Gallery hosts Artist Demonstration
Sue Szabo of “Intense Adornment” to share artistic process at free event
Toledo, OH—January 24, 2020. 20 North Gallery and the exhibiting artist of “Intense Adornment,” L. Sue Szabo, will be welcoming friends and collectors at a free Artist Demo open house event on Saturday, February 8, from 4 – 7 p.m. Guests will learn about the artist’s process through a detailed demonstration with an opportunity for conversation with the artist at the brief reception to follow.
Though torch-fire enameling is a traditional and stunning jewelry technique, art enameling programs are becoming less accessible. Exhibiting artist Szabo will demonstrate the process of enameling on copper, giving attendees an opportunity to experience this traditional technique that is becoming a lost art form. Additionally, Szabo will share insight into her techniques in forging as well as other techniques used in her process of creating hand-fabricated jewelry. The event begins at 4 p.m. with an "open house" reception featuring a cash bar by Venue. L. Sue Szabo will present from 4:30 – 6 p.m. Following the demonstration, attendees may enjoy one-on-one conversation with the artist at the reception where she will share her thoughts on artworks in the exhibit until 7 p.m. Response is not required but is appreciated, as attendees will have hands-on opportunity to create their own small, enameled copper medallions.
The “Intense Adornment” exhibit features the intricate fine art presentation works of Szabo, complemented by her timeless adornment pieces. Having over 25 years of metalsmithing experience, Szabo creates dramatic geometric pieces that exemplify her innate skill for imagery through forged metals and enamel.
20 North Gallery art director Condessa Croninger states, “Simultaneously bold and intricate, Szabo’s meticulously crafted fine art jewelry pieces are equally engaging as independent works of wall-mounted or table-top sculpture as they are as articles of adornment. Through the use of traditional techniques and non-conventional materials, precious metals and gemstones, her fine hand and acute attention to detail enhance the intensity of her visual and tactile messaging—whether playful, poignant or profound. 20 North Gallery is delighted to present L. Sue Szabo’s nationally-exhibited and award-winning jewelry in Intense Adornment, her first solo exhibition in Toledo, Ohio.”
Sue Szabo (Toledo, Ohio) began practicing medicine in 1988, receiving an M.D. through the Medical College of Ohio (Toledo, Ohio) while studying art through national workshops, the Toledo Museum of Art (Toledo, Ohio) and the University of Toledo in Ohio.
Now retired from medical practice, Szabo focuses on metalsmithing and other art endeavors. With over 25 years of metalsmithing experience, Szabo’s artworks have appeared in scores of national and international museum shows, invitational and juried, receiving numerous awards, including First awards in the annual Materials: Hard + Soft International Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition (Denton, Texas) and Best Of Ohio Designer Craftsmen (Ohio Craft Museum, Columbus, Ohio).
Szabo has completed impressive commission work, including a major sculptural work for the JP Morgan headquarters in London and a 750-piece enamel sculpture for the British cruise ship the MV Brittania. Szabo’s metal works appear in over 20 books and publications including Art Jewelry Today 4, Tales from the Toolbox and The Art of Fine Enameling 2nd Edition. Several of Szabo’s recent artworks have been selected to appear in Out of This World: Jewelry in the Space Age, an upcoming exhibit at the Tellus Science Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.
In addition to the “Intense Adornment” exhibit, 20 North Gallery continues to display glass, paintings, jewelry and artists’ cards by noted artists of the region. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from noon to 4p.m.
