Local Fair Housing Advocate Joins The Fair Housing Center as Vice President and General Counsel

The Fair Housing Center recently welcomed George Thomas in a newly created position as Vice President and General Counsel.

"I feel honored to join one of the first and most prominent fair housing organizations in the nation,” stated Mr. Thomas. “This is a critical time for fair housing in the United States and the greater Toledo area. I'm glad I can offer my skills and experience to help build a more inclusive and vibrant community."

Recently, Mr. Thomas served as Senior Attorney, Housing and Development for Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE). With over a decade of experience leading teams on housing issues, Mr. Thomas is recognized in the community as an advocate for justice. He is a recipient of the Toledo 20 under 40 Champion of Justice award and a graduate of Leadership Toledo. Mr. Thomas has presented locally and nationally about relevant housing topics such as lead poisoning and other determinants of health impacting people in low-income neighborhoods with substandard housing stock. Mr. Thomas's breadth of knowledge regarding the housing needs and challenges of our community is an asset to The Fair Housing Center’s mission and those we serve.

"We are very excited to have George join our fair housing team,” said Marie Flannery, President and CEO. "I first met George at a community meeting shortly after joining The Fair Housing Center in late 2018. Over the last year, we worked together on many housing-related initiatives. I became impressed with George's commitment to the housing movement and the integrity he has. I've jokingly said that since I saw George nearly every day, it was only natural that we should work together! The board, staff, and I are delighted to welcome George to his new role as Vice President and General Counsel and look forward to many productive years of working together to eliminate housing discrimination and ensure opportunity for all."

The Fair Housing Center has long served at the forefront of the fair housing movement, and the addition of Mr. Thomas’ expertise will strengthen the organization’s enforcement efforts as they work to address systemic barriers to fair housing including housing conditions, zoning regulations, and access to homeownership.
