Selene Center hosts International Women’s Day Event

International Women’s Day is a global day of recognition and celebration, marking the achievements of women and inspiring action to achieve greater gender equality and justice. Since 1913, women’s organizations around the world have observed IWD each year on March 8th by holding events that honor women’s successes, while also emphasizing the importance of continued action to ensure that gender justice is achieved and maintained.

The Selene Center provides local domestic violence services for families in the Sylvania Municipal Court jurisdiction and addresses gender imbalances that affect family violence. Executive Director, Laura Harrison, says in addition to providing services in safety, healing, and justice, the Selene Center also strives to empower women. “According to a report by the United Nations, violence against women is both a cause and consequence of gender inequality. If we want to make an impact on gender based violence in our community, we should also be advocating for closing gender gaps in the education, economic, and societal realms,” Harrison said.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #EachforEqual and proclaims an equal world is an enabled world. The event is being held at the Sylvania Branch Library and honors the achievements of Celia Williamson, PhD, Director of the Human Trafficking and Social Justice Institute at the University of Toledo, Attorney Valerie Fatica, and Northview Respect Club members Maiya Black and Fiona McDaniel. Following the speaker’s panel, guests will have the opportunity to make their own IWD t-shirts, write a letter to their State Representatives, and purchase signed copies Dr. Williamson’s book A Seat at the Table. One copy of her book will be raffled as a door prize.
