Stand Up Comedian and Toledo Resident Releases Debut Novel
Steve Sabo, 48, a Toledo resident for twenty years has been a long time touring comedian. In March, when Covid caused most businesses to shut down, he found himself unable to tour and stuck at home. Instead of waiting for things to go back to normal, he set forth accomplishing one of his long standing goals: to write a debut novel.
That novel is “Jester’s Run”, a 324 page thriller with sci-fi elements. The main character of the book is a stand-up comedian, but it isn’t a comedy. That character witnesses a murder and goes on the run to escape the people he thinks are trying to kill him. Unbeknownst to him he had also been infected with a dangerous virus, and if he doesn’t get a cure within three days, he very well might start a world-wide pandemic.
Sabo, a 1990 graduate from Saint Joseph Central Catholic High School in Fremont, OH insists that the tale is not for children.
“This is a fast-paced thriller with adult subjects. I am proud of the book and I think it holds some serious relevance, considering our current state of affairs. But there are definitely parts that could be disturbing to the more sensitive folks out there,” he insists.
Sabo started the book in March, when the shut downs began, and after several drafts and rewrites, he independently published it on Amazon earlier this month.
“I suddenly found myself with a lot of time on my hands… too much time,” Sabo said. “I am used to being busy and constantly traveling. But instead of complaining I felt I could occupy my time in a creative way. This was the result!”
Sabo plans to continue to write, and is currently working on a non-fiction book about the industry he is most familiar with, Stand-Up Comedy. He plans to return to fiction, but not sure if he will be writing a sequel or creating a brand new story with different characters.
“This was a great learning experience for me, “ Sabo insists. “Hopefully I can get back on the road soon, as other people get back to work and we get this virus under control. But I have the writing bug now, and plan to continue writing. It’s addicting! Everyone should give it a try. It’s therapeutic, and I think everyone has at least one story in them that’s worth telling.”
