20 North Gallery Hosts “Dan Hernandez: New Work” Artist Talk 
Exhibiting artist Dan Hernandez to speak at free event

Toledo, OH—February 5, 2022.On Thursday, February 24, 2022, from 6 – 9 p.m., 20 North Gallery will host an interactive Artist Talk. The free and open-to-the-public event will feature insight from the exhibiting artist of the current exhibit, “Dan Hernandez: New Work.” The solo exhibit features all-new paintings by Maumee, Ohio artist Dan Hernandez, exploring connections between technology, culture and video games. The exhibition will continue through March 26, 2022. 

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour and a free, light tapas buffet and cash bar by Venue. Guests are welcome to mingle and converse one-on-one with the artist. Dan Hernandez will present his Artist Talk from 7 – 8 p.m. A Q&A session will follow the artist’s presentation. Visitors are welcome to both attend the social hour and the artist presentation if they so choose. Due to limited seating, reservations are not required but are encouraged. 

Hernandez will speak about the varying processes and influences that form his Genesis, Reset and Los Santos series artworks. Having identified similarities between the narrative styles of medieval, European Renaissance and 8- and 16-bit video game art, Hernandez takes elements of digital design then draws, paints and screenprints engrossing works that connect cultures hundreds of years apart. Hernandez’s work draws inspiration and source material from a variety of consoles and games of significance to the artist, including Nintendo, Sega Genesis and Grand Theft Auto V. 

Dan Hernandez (Maumee, Ohio)
Dan Hernandez was born in San Diego, California in 1977. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000 from Northwest Missouri State (Maryville) and a Master of Fine Arts in 2002 from American University (Washington, DC). He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Art at The University of Toledo (Ohio). Since 2017, he has served The Arts Commission (Toledo, Ohio) on the Board of Trustees and as Co-Chair for the Art in Public Places Committee. 

Hernandez has had solo exhibitions in galleries in Ohio, Michigan and Arkansas. His work has been included in many group exhibitions, including shows at Shizaru Gallery (London, UK), Cindy Rucker Gallery (New York City), Contemporary Arts Center (Las Vegas, Nevada) Lehman College Art Gallery (Brooklyn, New York), Westport Art Center (Westport, Connecticut), and the Riffe Gallery (Columbus, Ohio) and MassArt Art Museum (Boston, Massachusetts). Hernandez is represented at Galeria Meraki in Ponte de Sor, Portugal in addition to Kim Foster Gallery (New York City) and 20 North Gallery (Toledo, Ohio). His work is in numerous private collections, both national and international, and has been featured and reviewed in several distinguished publications, including ARTnewsHyperAllergicArtillery MagazineArte FuseGizmodo, and Der Spiegel. 

Dan Hernandez was awarded the Bellinger Award at the Chautauqua Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art in 2010 and has been twice selected for an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, in 2011 and 2015. His most recent exhibitions were The Garden of Earthly Delights, Through the artworks of Colección SOLO Matadero Madrid, Centro de Creación Contemporánea (Madrid, Spain) as well as the two-artist show Hyphenated at McKissick Museum, University of South Carolina (Columbia, South Carolina) in 2021. 

In addition to the featured exhibition, 20 North Gallery continues to display glass, paintings, jewelry and artists’ cards by noted artists of the region. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from noon to 4p.m.
