The RIDGE Project Making a Difference in Lucas County
TOLEDO, OHIO – 6/1/22 – The Boards of Trustees of the Waterville Community Foundation and Greater Toledo Community Foundation have awarded grants to The RIDGE Project to be used to fund innovative and effective programming targeting area youth. A grant from the Katherine R. Smith Funds for Youth in the amount of $7,500.00 as well as the Bill Rowles Youth Foundation Fund in the amount of $3,000 were both awarded to the Ridge Project. The Katherine R. Smith and Bill Rowles grants will both be used to support YTC Film Camp 2022 which will be held at the Lucas County Youth Treatment Center later this year.
The Katherine R. Smith Funds for Youth provide support for programming that enhances the lives of young people up to age 18, with an emphasis on serving children with developmental disabilities or those who have been abused. Grants from the Bill Rowles Youth Foundation fund are awarded to support youth programs, youth groups, youth serving organizations and other activities in northwest Ohio which enhance the lives of young people, aged 18 years and younger.
The goal of this specific Film Camp is to reach juvenile offenders and their families by developing with interactive programs that help them develop prosocial attitudes, identify positive values, understand the their beliefs, and learn new skills. Through Film Camp, these families will be provided with opportunities to practice new positive behaviors in order to build a new foundation for a successful and healthy future. Utilizing The RIDGE Project’s TYRO Youth program combined with media instruction classes, the campers will create Public Service Announcements designed to reach their peers with a positive message. The youth will be the creative leads in every way- from conceptualization, to writing, acting, filming, and editing. Finally, they will present their PSAs before a panel of judges at a Film Festival. A Judge’s Choice and a People’s Choice award will be presented to the developers of the most engaging and informative PSA.
This immersion in developing prosocial messages increases the campers’ likelihood of becoming healthy adults, increase community safety, reduce victimization, and support youth reintegration with opportunities to demonstrate accountability and responsibility. The messages campers create during TYRO Film Camp have the capacity to reach thousands across various social media platforms.
Catherine Tijerina, Co-Founder of the Ridge Project shared what this funding will accomplish, “We are so very grateful for the support these grants will allow us to provide to youth and families in Lucas County. Film Camp will help the youth engage in positive activities that will increase their resiliency and self-awareness as they identify issues they can champion to create a better world.”
