On Monday, October 3, AIA Toledo will celebrate World Architecture Day with keynote speakers, educational outreach, and a project tour. Events will highlight the positive impact of design in our local community and beyond.

Created by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in 1985, World Architecture Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October in parallel with UN World Habitat Day. AIA Toledo's 1st Annual event aims to highlight the positive impact of design in our local community and beyond, with speakers from Amman, Jordan; New York, NY; and Toledo, OH.

The day's events will begin with keynote luncheon speaker, architect and landscape architect, Dr. Kamel Mahadin, FASLA, IFLA, from Amman, Jordan. Dr. Mahadin will address the practice of the environmental design of architecture, landscape design, and master planning in an international context.

Students interested in the built environment, design, and architecture are invited to the High School Design Competition Open House from 3-4:30 pm (registration is not required). Learn about the competition, scholarships offered, and how students and educators can participate. For over 70 years, AIA Toledo has invested in youth and the profession through outreach to local junior and senior high schools and student winners have gone on to great careers locally, nationally, and around the world.

Following the Open House, David Vega-Barachowitz, Associate Principal at WXY architecture + urban design in New York, NY, will provide a narrative and overview of the ongoing design-build effort for the signature Downtown section of the Glass City Riverwalk.

See the progress in person with a walking site tour of Glass City Metropark at 6 pm. Led by Jennifer Van Horn, Assoc. AIA, Director of Park Planning and Capital Projects, the tour will focus on the restoration on the site, the design elements and visitor amenities, and the connection and importance of this project with the Riverwalk.

Register for the day’s events at www.aia.org/toledo and look forward to a great day exploring and discussing how design and place making enhance our lives, our well-being, and the environment.
