Commemorative Air Force wing Forms at Toledo Express Airport
WORLD WAR II AVIATION ORGANIZATION OPENS LOCAL CHAPTER
OCT. 11, 2022 (Toledo, OH) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF), the World’s Largest Flying Museum with 80 locations worldwide is forming a new local chapter, to be called the Toledo Wing, at the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Airport. The Wing will focus on using historic airplanes and artifacts to help educate the public about the sacrifices of American veterans. “Young people, especially, are not learning about our past. Lots of men and women made great sacrifices to win and preserve our American freedoms. We want to use CAF airplanes in Toledo and elsewhere to help tell that story,” said CAF President Hank Coates.
As part of the commitment to Toledo, the CAF will place at least one of its World War II aircraft at the Toledo Airport. This aircraft will be maintained, operated, and flown by local Northwest Ohio pilots and volunteers. “It is a great honor to be a part of expanding the CAF presence in the Northwest Ohio area,” said Brad McDonald, Owner and CEO of the Toledo-based Federal Aerospace Institute (FAI). “For more than 65 years, the Commemorative Air Force has used its fleet of historic-military airplanes to help educate and inspire generations of Americans through events and educational programs.”
The CAF Toledo Wing will be led by McDonald and a group of local Toledo pilots, historians, and enthusiasts. McDonald said “Anyone is welcome to come and join us. You do not need to be a pilot or mechanic to participate. We want anyone with enthusiasm about aviation or history. My goal is to make the Toledo Wing one of the most active, energetic, and inspiring squadrons of the CAF.”
The CAF Toledo Wing will hold a kick-off meeting on Tuesday, Oct 18, at 6:00 p.m. at FAI’s headquarters at the Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Airport, located at 11371 W. Airport Service Rd., Swanton, Ohio, 43558. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about World War II aviation, the CAF, and how to get involved.
