25 Years of airtime - The Juice celebrates anniversary, and birthday of radio legend, Charlie Chuck
[Toledo, OH] - On Sunday, November 6, WJUC- The Juice 107.3 will celebrate its 25th anniversary and the birthday of radio legend W.Charles Welch, better known as Charlie Chuck.
Charlie Chuck pioneered The Juice, building it from the ground up, as the first Black-owned and operated radio station in the Toledo Area. The station officially signed on the air, on February 27, 1997.
“Blacks own about 168 of 10,315 commercial radio stations in the United States. With fewer and fewer Black-owned media outlets, having a voice is more critical than ever before" says Mr. Welch.
The juice began as a station playing R&B, Blues, Hip Hop and Gospel....catering to ages 8 to 80! Today, the station is Adult Urban Contemporary, playing Hits from Back in the Day and Today, from artists such as Mary J Blige and Bel Biv Devoe, with a twist of music by new artists like H.E.R and Giveon.
Charlie Chuck's legacy continues, with a new generation of owners who continue the obligation to serve the community.
“To continue the legacy built by Charles and Marjorie Welch is a tremendous undertaking I am honored to accept. The goal is to continue to be a beacon in the community”, says Debra Lynn, President of Fleming Street Communications Inc.
The anniversary celebration will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn in Perrysburg from 3 to 7 pm. Guests can expect entertainment, food, past and present on-air talent, station staff and friends and family, a trip down memory lane, and of course lot and lots of music.
