Building a Dementia Friendly Toledo
MemoryLane Care Services, in collaboration with the Ohio Council for Cognitive Health, Dementia Friends Ohio and Leadership Toledo, are hosting a kickoff event beginning the journey for Toledo to become designated as a Dementia Friendly community.
The event will be held Thursday, June 15, 2023, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Glass City Pavilion at the Glass City Metropark, 1001 Front Street, Toledo, OH 43605.
The event is intended to raise awareness about dementia, provide practical resources for businesses and organizations to incorporate dementia friendly practices into their operations, and offer information about local resources that support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
According to Dementia Friendly America, “A dementia friendly community is a village, town, city or county that is informed, safe and respectful of individuals living with dementia, their families and caregivers and provides supportive options that foster quality of life.”
“With the growing population of older adults and the known prevalence of dementia, we can expect that this will impact many aspects of our community. Dementia has physical, psychological, social, and emotional impacts for people living with dementia, their caregivers, family, and society at-large,” said Lyndi Wyrostek, a social worker for MemoryLane Care Services.
Speakers will include Pete Gerken, President of the Board of Lucas County Commissioners, Justin Moor, Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio, Inc., and Emily Yark Reny, Yark Automotive Group.
Additionally, a panel presentation facilitated by Dr. Bonnie Burman from the Ohio Council for Cognitive Health, will address how businesses, organizations and local government can foster dementia-supportive services and environments, and assist their employees who are also caregivers. Panelists include:
- Sharon Hanna, The Toledo Museum of Art, Docent
- Dean Horrigan, Elder Law Attorney
- Emily Yark Reny, Yark Automotive Group, Community Relations Director
- Lynn Ritter, Dementia Expert
- Jennifer Vancil, Lott Industries, Development Coordinator, and Toledo Zoo Board Member
