Toledo, OH. – Making The Dream a Reality: Your Vote is Your Voice is the theme of this year’s event commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This tribute will take place on Sunday, January 14th, 2024 at 4:00 p.m., at Glenwood Lutheran, 2545 Monroe St. Toledo, OH.  Glenwood is adjacent to the Toledo Museum of Art.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson.  Paula was the first black female mayor of the city of Toledo, and she currently represents Ohio’s 11th Senate District.  Senator Hicks-Hudson’s long and storied career has centered on improving her community and ensuring people understand the power of the ballot box.

Ruth Whittle serves as the chairwoman for the event.  She is a long-time member of Glenwood and is leading the revival of the annual MLK tributes at the church.  Ruth grew up in rural Mississippi in the 1960s and was on the front lines of the civil and voting rights movement in that era.  Ruth and her siblings endured relentless threats at formerly all-white schools in her hometown to receive the education they rightfully deserved.  Ruth also volunteered to be a poll watcher in the election immediately following passage of the Voting Rights Act.  The book Silver Rights by Constance Curry chronicles the family’s valiant struggle for equality.

“It’s so important for us to keep Dr. King’s legacy alive,” Ms. Whittle said, “He led a movement that made tremendous progress.  Sadly, we still have not been able to fully achieve the racial justice and equity he envisioned.  The recent voting rights setbacks are an example of injustices that Dr. King would be rallying against if he were still alive today.”

Music will be a prominent feature of this event.  The Music Coordinator for the service, Dr. Anthony Pattin, has gathered an impressive slate of accomplished Toledo-area instrumentalists, as well as renowned soloists Bradley Baker and Patricia McCauley fronting a combined choir of more than fifty voices from churches throughout the Toledo area.

Glenwood Church is excited to host this tribute for the Toledo community.

All are welcome to attend.
