Local Moms Demand Action Chapter Sponsors Event Recognizing  June 7th National Gun Violence Awareness Day  

Toledo, OH. – In commemoration of the 10th Annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day, the Toledo area Moms Demand Action Chapter is hosting a gathering as part of a national effort that seeks to reduce  the prevalence of gun violence. 

This event will take place on Friday, June 7th, 2024, at 12:00 noon at The Peace and Healing Commons  at Toledo Spain Plaza ,1840 Collingwood Blvd., Toledo OH*. 

The event will feature speakers from:

 Moms Demand Action

 Students Demand Action

 The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement

 The Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition 

Proclamations will also be presented by State Rep Michele Grim and representatives from the Toledo City Council. Local faith leaders will offer opening and closing prayers. 

Visitors are welcome to arrive as early as 10:30 a.m. to participate in wrapping the trees with orange material. 

The event will serve as a kick-off to Wear Orange Weekend, June 7th-9th, 2024. These two concurrent events commemorate the life of Hadiya Pendleton. Fifteen-year-old Hidaya was shot and killed on a Chicago playground in 2013. In early June every year, thousands of people in the U.S. wear orange, Hadiya’s favorite color, to honor her and the more than 43,000 Americans who are killed with guns and approximately 76,000 more are shot and wounded every year. Toledo will also “Wear Orange” that  weekend … the dome of the Lucas County Courthouse will be illuminated with orange light and trees  throughout The Peace and Healing Plaza will be draped in orange.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a national grassroots movement fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. Moms Demand Action is part of the Everytown for Gun Safety. In 2023 thousands of gun violence survivors, Moms Demand Action, and Students Demand Action volunteers, in collaboration with the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund and more than 160 local partners, hosted more than 450 events and activities in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

*NOTE: In case of rain, provisions have been made for the event to take place at the Senior Center on Jefferson Ave.
