CommunityCare Free Medical Clinics Celebrates the Completion of New Bus Shelter with Ribbon-Cutting Event
Toledo, OH (June 24, 2024) – CommunityCare Clinics (CCC), a student-run, non-profit free clinic operated by University of Toledo students, proudly announces the completion of a new bus shelter on S. Byrne Road, a project made possible by the AARP Community Challenge Grant, improving transportation and healthcare accessibility for hundreds of Toledo residents. The new bus shelter was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting event on Thursday, June 20, 2024, attended by local leaders and community members.
"This project started from a patient who expressed a need, and you listened," said Toledo City Council Member At-Large Nick Komives at the event. "It's an important step in ensuring that all Toledo residents have access to essential healthcare driven by compassion, empathy, and heart."
"This is the beginning of a new chapter in our journey toward greater accessibility, equity, and well-being," said Zachary Schreckenberger, a University of Toledo medical student and representative from CommunityCare Clinics. "This bus shelter is more than just a structure, it symbolizes opportunity, hope, and the power of what we can achieve when we come together with a shared vision for a better tomorrow."
Since 2011, CCC has been at the forefront of providing free comprehensive healthcare services to the diverse residents of Toledo. Recognizing transportation as a significant barrier to healthcare, CCC secured an AARP Community Challenge Grant to construct an ADA-compliant bus stop shelter adjacent to the CCC Main Clinic, establish a patient ridesharing program with Uber Health, and develop a Community Transportation Resource Toolkit. Since the grant program’s debut in 2017, AARP has funded nearly 1,400 projects, reaching an estimated 100 million people across all 50 states. This project was made possible due to the generous support of AARP, Toyota, and local partners A.A. Boos & Sons, Inc., DGL Consulting Engineers, LLC, Engage Studio Architects, LLC, the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA), and the City of Toledo.
