National Museum of the Great Lakes Kicks Off 2024 Fall Lecture Series with Freighter Cook Catherine Schmuck
The National Museum of the Great Lakes is hosting its first presentation of our 2024 Fall Lecture Series, sponsored by Larry and Karen Bettcher. Join us on Wednesday, September 11 at 7 p.m. as we welcome Catherine Schmuck for her lecture, “A Glimpse into the Life of a Great Lakes Ship’s Cook.”
Offered as a hybrid event, participants have the option to attend in person at the National Museum of the Great Lakes or virtually via Zoom. Catherine Schmuck, a seasoned freighter chef, will share her experiences cooking for crews aboard Great Lakes ships, providing a unique perspective on the day-to-day life at sea. A Q&A session will follow the presentation, giving attendees a chance to ask Catherine about her adventures on the water.
“We’re thrilled to kick off our fall season with such a fun and unique look at life working on a freighter,” said Carrie Sowden, Director of Archaeology and Research at the National Museum of the Great Lakes. “It’s a great opportunity to take a deeper dive into the maritime world.”
In addition to the evening lecture, the museum will host a book signing with Catherine Schmuck from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Visitors can meet the speaker and get signed copies of her cookbook, “Ship to Shore,” as well as her children’s book, “The Stowaway Adventures of Mitchell Mouse,” both available in our museum store.
