National Museum of the Great Lakes Hosts Lecture on Groundbreaking Invasive Species Control in the Great Lakes
September 25, 2024 (Toledo, Ohio) –The National Museum of the Great Lakes invites the public to the second presentation in its 2024 Fall Lecture Series, presented by Larry and Karen Bettcher. This hybrid event, taking place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 7 p.m., offers both in-person participation at the museum and virtual attendance via Zoom.
The event features Radmantis co-founders Moira Van Staaden and Robert Huber, who will present on “Invasive Species Control in the Great Lakes: Uncrewed Smart Traps to the Rescue.” Their work highlights the pressing need to address the damage caused by invasive species such as the sea lamprey, which threaten the biodiversity and health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. This lecture will showcase cutting-edge developments in AI and robotics, demonstrating how these technologies—combined with expertise in fish biology and behavior—are reshaping efforts to combat these ecological threats.
As global challenges like food insecurity and environmental sustainability grow, Van Staaden and Huber are at the forefront of developing autonomous and human-assistive tools that enhance resource management and aquaculture. Their innovative work holds promise not only for the Great Lakes but for water systems worldwide, promoting healthier ecosystems and sustainable fisheries.
