Toledo, Ohio –
On Friday, October 18th, soul revival musician Kelly Finnigan will perform a special record release show for his solo album A Lover Was Born at Culture Clash Records. When the store closes at 7:00pm on the 18th, event attendees will be treated to a memorable in-store performance on the album’s actual release date. Music fans can gain admission by simply pre-ordering A Lover Was Born from cultureclashrecords.com or by stopping into the store and placing a pre-order at the counter. Additional guests may be added for just $10 each. All pre-orders will ship or be available for pickup on the day of the performance. Culture Clash does expect to have some room for last-minute attendees, who can purchase the record at the door for entry.
Kelly Finnigan’s record label, Colemine Records, accurately describes him as “an auteur, a visionary that writes, records, performs and produces his own material” — what the soul revival movement has been missing. Finnigan’s A Lover Was Born is informed by distance as a measure of time and place, with a grit and grace that turns passion into virtue. The latest solo release from The Monophonics frontman roots itself in the best traditions of midwest soul labels like King, Curtom, Dakar, and the Bodie Recording Company. A Lover Was Born is a testimony that these deep cut grooves are not resigned to nostalgia, instead, they are at the burning heart of longing and hope.
“There’s nothing like making records. It feels like that’s my purpose — the reason I was put on this earth.” –Kelly Finnigan
This event represents a collaboration that highlights kinship and a growing synergy among a few of Ohio’s independent music industry mainstays. Colemine Records, which specializes in soulful sounds, is based in Loveland, Ohio within Plaid Room Records. Additionally, A Lover Was Born was pressed at the Gotta Groove Records plant in Cleveland, Ohio. It is not by coincidence, then, that Finnigan and Colemine selected Toledo’s own Culture Clash Records for its one and only record release celebration.
“Culture Clash is so thrilled to host Kelly, and it’s an honor that he and the label chose us as the spot for his record release show. All of this came about due to us getting together for drinks and conversation with the Colemine Records team in New Orleans during Record Store Day’s Summer Camp industry conference this past July. We all were – and still are – really into the idea of Ohio supporting Ohio.” –Cyd Gottlieb, Culture Clash Assistant Manager
