National Museum of the Great Lakes Opens New Exhibit: "Frozen Fun: Recreation on the Icy Great Lakes"
December 10, 2024 (Toledo, Ohio) – The National Museum of the Great Lakes is excited to announce the opening of Frozen Fun: Recreation on the Icy Great Lakes, a new temporary micro exhibit celebrating the winter traditions and activities that transform the Great Lakes into a frosty playground. The exhibit is open through the end of February 2025 and included with Museum admission.
Winter on the Great Lakes has long been a time for adventure and ingenuity. Frozen Fun invites visitors to explore how residents and visitors alike have embraced the icy expanse for generations. Artifacts on display include a historic ice saw used for harvesting ice, vintage fishing poles, and beautifully preserved wooden ice skates that showcase the craftsmanship and resourcefulness of the past.
“Winter on the Great Lakes has always brought unique opportunities to engage with these waters in new and exciting ways,” said Carrie Sowden, Director of Archaeology and Research for the National Museum of the Great Lakes. “This exhibit allows us to share the stories, tools, and traditions that have made these activities such an enduring part of our region’s history.”
Through photographs, artifacts, and personal stories, Frozen Fun highlights both the practicality and joy of winter recreation on the Great Lakes. Visitors will learn about unique traditions such as ice fishing, ice boating, and winter island access, as well as the enduring spirit of exploration and community during the coldest months.
Frozen Fun: Recreation on the Icy Great Lakes is included with museum admission and is suitable for all ages. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, history buff, or simply curious about the frozen magic of the Great Lakes, this exhibit offers something for everyone.
