BGSU to welcome Dr. Modupe Labode for Black History Month Guest Lecture

Dr. Modupe Labode will present the 2025 Black History Month Guest Lecture at Bowling Green State University, hosted by the Department of History as part of BGSU’s Black History Month program. Dr. Labode is the Curator of the Division of Political History at the National Museum of American History.  

The lecture will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at 11:30am in Olscamp Hall 115 on the main campus of BGSU. The lecture is free and open to the public.  

Dr. Labode will speak about her work as a public historian with the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institute. The lecture is entitled "Reckoning with Remembrance: Interpreting the Life and Legacy of Emmett Till at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History." The talk will focus on the interpretation of a vandalized historical marker commemorating the site where Emmett Till's body was recovered from the Tallahatchie River in 1955. The talk will focus on the exhibition team's ongoing relationship with the communities in Mississippi that created historical markers for the sites related to Emmett Till's life and legacy in Mississippi. She will focus on practices of Restorative History and the meaning of interpreting Black history in a general history museum.
