“Flights of Fancy” exhibition at 20 North Gallery
Mixed media art and surreal paintings on display in downtown gallery
Toledo, OH—January 8, 2025. On Friday, January 24, 20 North Gallery will open “Flights of Fancy: Carrie Hawkins and Matt Tisdale” featuring paintings by Matt Tisdale of Columbus, Ohio and mixed media art by Carrie Hawkins of Temperance, Michigan. The two-person exhibit will include paintings on panel and paper by neo-surrealist artist Tisdale and mixed media pieces by Hawkins, who creates dreamlike artworks out of fiber, metal, wood and other repurposed materials.
The exhibit will open with a free, Public Reception on Friday January 24, 2025 from 6 – 9 p.m., featuring a light tapas buffet and cash bar. The exhibition will continue through March 22, 2025.
The “Flights of Fancy” exhibit will enchant viewers through the imaginative artworks of Columbus, Ohio painter Matt Tisdale and Temperance, Michigan collage artist Carrie Hawkins. The exhibiting works range from small-scale, wall-mounted mixed media artworks to paintings 3 & 4 feet in length, on paper & panel. Hawkins will present pieces from her “Dreamscapes” series in wood, fiber & more. Tisdale will present paintings in acrylic and oil, in his signature neo-surrealist style.
20 North Gallery Art Director Condessa Croninger states, “The distinctive works of both Carrie Hawkins and Matt Tisdale transport the viewer to an arcadian alter-reality, replete with stirring whimsy that alternates between fanciful tableaux and surrealistic iconography. Tisdale’s paintings and Hawkins’ collages create a unique and energetic exhibition unlike any other in 20 North Gallery’s 32-year history, sure to delight new and established collectors.”
Carrie Hawkins (Temperance, Michigan) received her Associate of Applied Business from Davis College (Toledo, Ohio) and her Bachelor of Arts from The University of Toledo (Ohio). For three decades, Hawkins has regularly participated in juried group exhibitions across the United States and recently in Ontario, Canada. As a frequent contributor to arts festivals, Hawkins has shown work in Art Basel (Miami Beach, Florida), ArtPrize (Grand Rapids, Michigan), Art on the Mall (Toledo, Ohio) and the Crosby Festival of the Arts (Toledo Botanical Garden, Toledo, Ohio) among others. She currently serves as Vice President of the Toledo Craftsman’s Guild (Ohio), of which she has been a member since 2006.
Matt Tisdale (Westerville, Ohio) received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Columbus College of Art and Design (Ohio). Tisdale completed commercial and residential mural work before entering his career in graphic design and illustration, through which he has worked for clients such as Hollister Co. Tisdale’s paintings have been exhibited across the United States in juried shows and arts festivals, including the Black Swamp Arts Festival (Bowling Green, Ohio), Spectrum Fantastic Art Live (Kansas City, Missouri), Art Birmingham (Birmingham, Michigan) and Art in the Loop (Memphis, Tennessee). His work has been accepted multiple times into the annual Crosby Festival of the Arts in Toledo Botanical Garden (Ohio), through which he was recently awarded Second Place in Painting in 2024.
20 North Gallery will host a free and open-to-the-public Artist Talk on Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 6 – 8 p.m., featuring insight from each exhibiting artist on her or his inspiration and process. Carrie Hawkins will present from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. Matt Tisdale will speak from 7 – 7:30 p.m. Q&A sessions will follow each artist's remarks. Attendees may enjoy further one-on-one conversation with the artists until 8 p.m.
In addition to the featured exhibition, 20 North Gallery continues to display glass, paintings and jewelry by noted artists of the region. Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays from noon to 4p.m.
