Toledo Museum of Art to Open Groundbreaking Digital Art Exhibition, Infinite Images, on July 12
The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) is bringing a new kind of art experience to the region this summer. Opening July 12, Infinite Images: The Art of Algorithms explores how artists—from the 1960s to today—have used systems, patterns, and computer code to create art. The exhibition will be on view through November 30, 2025.
The show features more than 50 works by 24 artists and highlights both early pioneers like Josef Albers and Vera Molnár, and today’s leading digital creators, including Tyler Hobbs, Sarah Meyohas, and 0xDeafbeef. For many of these artists, this is their first time exhibiting in a major U.S. museum.
“This exhibition helps us see that digital art is part of a long tradition of artists using new tools to express ideas,” said Adam Levine, director of the Toledo Museum of Art. “It’s an exciting blend of past and present that makes us think differently about what art can be.”
Curated by digital art expert Julia Kaganskiy, Infinite Images takes visitors on a journey through four themes—starting with early experiments and moving into topics like randomness in art, interactive digital tools, and how digital artists mimic patterns in nature.
“Generative art is having a moment right now—but the truth is, artists have been working with algorithms, systems, and rules for decades,” said Kaganskiy. “This exhibition connects the dots between past innovations and today’s cutting-edge digital practices in a way that’s both accessible and thought-provoking.”
Highlights of the exhibition include:
· A working plotter machine that draws computer-generated art daily, with free prints available to TMA members.
· An interactive sculpture by 0xDeafbeef that lets visitors explore digital sound art using knobs and switches.
· Digital works powered by blockchain and artificial intelligence, offering a peek into how artists are using the latest tech to push boundaries.
