Kevin Spitler's 'Sock It to the Homeless' Drive Sets Record With 22 Drop Sites Across Toledo Area
Toledo, OH - November 5, 2025 -- Former Toledo Hemp Center owner Kevin Spitler is leading the annual Sock it to the Homeless drive with the most collection locations yet. Although Toledo Hemp Center closed in 2024, Spitler continues the community work he is known for, focusing on a simple need that makes a big difference: clean, warm socks.
The collection began November 1 and runs through January 4, 2026. Donors can drop new socks at 22 locations from Monroe, MI to Swanton, OH, making it easy for people across the region to help. After the drive ends, Spitler and supporters will join 419 Cares to hand out the socks in downtown Toledo on January 11 at 1717 Madison Ave, starting at 11:30 a.m.
"Socks are one of the most needed items for people living outside, especially in our cold winters," said Spitler. "A dry pair can help prevent sores and infections and brings comfort and dignity to someone’s day."
Spitler says his motivation is personal. "I battled homelessness in recent years, and this is my way to give back to the community that helped me," he said. "If you can spare a pack of socks, it can mean more than you know."
To make giving simple, local businesses are hosting collection boxes at these 22 sites: Daffy’s Bar and Grille; Kickstand Bar and Grille; Hindsight Pizza Kitchen; 3 PizzAroma locations (Swanton, Holland, and Maumee); Papa’s Tavern; The Attic on Adams; Nar Cannabis (Monroe); Lil Shebas Tavern; Hippie Love Apothecary; 5 Pints Bar & Grille; Dandino’s Pizza and More; ArtisticTat2; Love My Dog Pet Grooming (Lambertville); Marco’s Pizza (Temperance); Spartans Nutrition Juice Bar; Corner Saloon; OB’s Bar and Grille; New Brenda’s Dining; Polish Ostrich Tavern; and Whiskey Bean Boutique.
All sizes are welcome, from kids to adults, with a special need for thick, warm socks for winter. New socks are preferred. Community members, schools, teams, and clubs are encouraged to host mini-collections and drop them at any site on the list.
For years, Spitler has ended each sock drive by meeting people where they are—on the streets and in shelters—and handing out pairs one by one. Volunteers brave the cold, walk block to block, and share brief moments of care with neighbors who often go without basics. This year’s larger network of boxes aims to reach even more people.
Those who want to help can donate socks at any location during business hours now through January 4, 2026, or join the distribution with 419 Cares on January 11 at 1717 Madison Ave at 11:30 a.m. Groups wishing to coordinate bulk donations or volunteer on distribution day can check social posts about "Sock it to the Homeless" for updates.
