Acclaimed Irish Author/Storyteller Gareth Higgins to Speak at Sylvania Church
Sylvania - Irish Author and storyteller Gareth Higgins, who combines personal experiences, wisdom, and humor for spellbinding presentations on how to combat fear in our daily lives, will be the guest speaker for a two day-event at Sylvania United Church of Christ April 25-26.
Higgins, raised in Belfast during the violent Northern Ireland conflict known as The Troubles (1968-98), is the author of "How Not to be Afraid - Seven Ways to Live When Everything Seems Terrifying." A gifted orator, he shows how the power of storytelling can shape our lives and our world.
"We are delighted to be hosting Gareth Higgins," said Pastor Vern Swett. "He has a powerful message to share with our community."
HIggins earned a PH.D. in Sociology from Queen's University Belfast. He co-taught the world's first graduate course in Reconciliation Studies at Trinity College Dublin. He founded the on-line literary magazine The Porch and is a co-founder of Wild Goose, New Story and Movies & Meaning festivals.
Higgins divides his time between the U.S. and Northern Ireland.
On Saturday, April 25, Higgins will speak at 2 p.m. in a session at the church at 7240 Erie St., Sylvania, that will include a Q&A. A reception will follow at 3:45. Admission is $15 at the door, cash or check only.
On Sunday, April 26, Higgins will be guest speaker at the church's 10 a.m. service. An informal discussion session will follow at 11:45. There is no charge for this event.
