Lucas SWCD Offers Opportunity to Buy Native Plants and More During One-Day Sale on May 22nd
Lucas County, Ohio – Lucas Soil & Water Conservation District (Lucas SWCD) is excited to once again offer garden enthusiasts and plant lovers a chance to buy locally-grown native plants this spring! All are welcome to come to our office on Friday, May 22nd between 3-6 PM to not only buy native plants, but also other items like composting kits, garden signs, soil test kits, bagged compost, and more. This family-friendly event is free, rain or shine, and open to everyone. Supplies are limited and no sales prior to 3 PM.
We will also have other partner agencies' information tables, a children's activity, and food vendors again this year. Additional items include Native Pollinator Garden Kits, vegetable and bedding plants, and custom-made bird houses and feeders.
If you are wondering what makes a plant "native", it means that it is a specific species of plant that has grown naturally in a particular area for many years and is accustomed to our climate, soils, and precipitation. As a result, native plants require less watering, nutrient inputs, and overall maintenance than non-native plants. In addition, the wildlife we have here are dependent upon the native plants that they have co-existed with for many, many years. Native plants also have extensive root systems that soak up more water and stabilize soil. Adding native plants to the landscape is one way we can all help the environment and our wallets!
