Wednesday at Woodlands Winds Down the Season with Steve Kennedy
As Wednesday at Woodlands nears the end of its summer season, Steve Kennedy takes the stage on Wednesday, August 26, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Woodlands Park shelter area, 429 E. Boundary Street in Perrysburg. Bring a chair and choose a spot in the sun or shade to enjoy the lunchtime concert.
For Kennedy, making music is more than an occasional gig. It is his full-time profession and a path that began when he was just 13 years old, running lights for his uncle's band, Radio Flier. By 15, he had moved from behind the scenes to singing with the band, beginning a musical career that has now spanned approximately 25 years.
Music also runs in Kennedy's family. Both of his uncles are local musicians, and his cousin Ivan, who now lives in Phoenix, is a musician as well. Even Kennedy's middle name carries a family connection. His full name is Steve King Kennedy, with "King" passed down from his grandfather, whose first name was King. While the unusual name has prompted questions about everything from author Stephen King to a possible JFK connection, the explanation is simply part of his family's history.
Growing up around working musicians gave Kennedy an early introduction to performing, while two very different bands, The Beatles and The Killers, inspired him to pursue music himself.
That range of influences is reflected in the wide range of music Kennedy enjoys performing. His repertoire reaches from the 1960s through the present, crossing genres rather than settling into any one particular style.
"I genuinely love all types of music," Kennedy said.
Guitar is Kennedy's primary instrument, but his musical abilities extend beyond it. He also plays some piano, drums and bass, adding to the versatility of a musician who has spent much of his life around music and performing.
After approximately 25 years of performing, Kennedy continues to make his living doing what he loves. His broad repertoire and genuine appreciation for different styles of music allow him to connect with audiences across generations, bringing plenty to draw from when he takes the stage at Wednesday at Woodlands.
