Toledo-Area Homeowners Urged to Schedule Oak Pruning This Winter to Reduce Oak Wilt Risk

If you have an oak tree that needs trimming, the timing matters. Joey Tree, a family-owned tree service based in Whitehouse, Ohio, is reminding Toledo-area homeowners that late fall and winter are generally the best times to prune oak trees because of the risk of oak wilt disease.

Oak wilt is a serious fungal disease that can spread when certain beetles carry fungal spores to fresh wounds on oak trees. Pruning during warmer months, when these insects are active, can increase infection risk.

In Ohio, November through February is generally considered the safest window for routine oak pruning, depending on weather conditions.

"Oak trees are different from a lot of the other trees we work on," said Joey Buczko, an ISA Certified Arborist with Joey Tree. "If an oak needs trimming, we'd much rather plan that work for the winter when the risk of oak wilt transmission is lower."

What Should Homeowners Look For?

Winter is a good time to have an oak evaluated if it has dead or damaged branches, limbs growing close to a house or garage, or branches that may need structural pruning.

Not every oak needs trimming, and removing too much can do more harm than good. The goal is to address specific problems while preserving the tree's natural structure.

Homeowners should also understand that dangerous or broken limbs shouldn't necessarily be left hanging until winter. If an oak presents an immediate safety concern, a qualified tree professional can evaluate the situation and determine the appropriate next steps.

Schedule Oak Tree Pruning Before Spring

Joey Tree recommends that homeowners with oaks needing routine pruning arrange an evaluation during the dormant season rather than waiting until warmer weather.

The company provides oak tree pruning, tree removal, and arborist consulting throughout Toledo, Maumee, Perrysburg, Waterville, Whitehouse, and surrounding Northwest Ohio communities.
